Postnatal Chiropractic

Pregnant ladies! Dr. Amy is the baby whisperer. I’m in the last weeks of my pregnancy and my baby has been very comfortable staying in a transverse position. Amy performed the Webster technique and my baby flipped to head down that same night. She’s been amazing at relieving all my aches and pains throughout this pregnancy and even before. Cannot recommend her enough!

Pre + Postnatal CHIROPRACTIC

We understand that the health of a pregnant woman is vitally important because the care we offer affects both mom and child. Proper nervous system and spinal function is crucial to the development of your baby and essential to the well-being and comfort of mom. The effects of chiropractic care during pregnancy are far-reaching and extend way beyond treating pain.

By ensuring that the pelvis and spine are in proper alignment and motion, chiropractic care helps to ensure that the developing baby has plenty of room to grow within the womb. By maintaining this proper alignment and motion throughout pregnancy, chiropractic care can also improve the ability of the expecting mother to have a safe and natural birth process – which is something that is extremely vital to the health of both mom and baby.

The modern birth process is often one of the most traumatic events that a person will endure in their life. Unfortunately, today, many health care providers choose to look at pregnancy as a “medical condition” rather than the incredibly safe and natural process that it is. A woman’s body is designed perfectly for the birth process, and difficulties typically only arise if mom is functioning at less than 100%.

DR. AMY and dr. brittni are CERTIFIED IN THE WEBSTER TECHNIQUE

The postural changes caused by a woman’s protruding abdomen throughout pregnancy places a significant amount of stress on the muscles, ligaments, and tendons of the low back and pelvis. These stresses can lead to the pelvis becoming torqued or twisted, a condition known as intrauterine constraint, which can compromise the space of the developing baby. Chiropractors certified in the Webster Technique have the ability to restore a state of balance in the pelvic joints, musculature, and ligaments to create an environment that allows for a much more natural delivery process.

The Webster Technique as defined by the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) as “a chiropractic analysis and adjustment that reduces nervous system stress and potential intrauterine constraint by improving pelvic muscle and ligament function which can reduce torsion to the uterus and allow the baby to get into the best possible position for birth.” This also maximizes uterine space allowing for optimal baby development thereby decreasing the restriction on developing structures such as the cranium, spine, and extremities. Having the maximum space available also allows the baby to move into the best possible position for birth decreasing the chance of breech or transverse presentation which subsequently decreases the need for C-section or other medical interventions. This in no way means that chiropractors are turning breech babies. They are simply providing a state of pelvic balance and therefore increasing the opportunity for the mother to give her child a natural and less traumatic birthing process and achieved in a very gentle non-invasive way.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is Chiropractic Care Safe?

Chiropractic care is generally considered safe. However, there is a small chance that you may develop complications after chiropractic care. These complications include increased pain, increased herniation, and stroke.

However, these risks are minimal when compared with those of other medical treatments, including prescription drugs and surgical procedures. Each year, millions of patients are hospitalized after experiencing adverse reactions to prescription medications. If you've ever undergone a surgical procedure, you may remember signing a waiver agreeing you understand the procedure has numerous risks, including permanent disability or death. These waivers aren't just an unnecessary precaution, as more than 250,000 people die from medical errors each year. In comparison, the risk of injury or complications during Chiropractic care is far less of a concern.

How Does Chiropractic Care Help with Pain Relief?

Chiropractic adjustment focuses on diagnosing and treating various disorders in the musculoskeletal system. It includes issues with your spine, joints, tendons, ligaments, muscles, and nerves, typically caused by mechanical problems stemming from poor posture and injury. Chiropractors use various techniques to gently manipulate the spine and joints to restore proper functioning and decrease pain associated with these disorders.

One of the critical components of chiropractic care is manual manipulation, which aims to ease tension or stiffness in your spinal joints by applying controlled, targeted pressure. This can help improve joint function, restore movement, and reduce pain or other symptoms. Different techniques are used depending on the type of condition or injury being treated.

Is Chiropractic Care Safe for Children?

Chiropractic adjustments on kids are safe, non-invasive, and use only light and gentle pressure to achieve optimal results. Many parents comment that it looks like just a gentle touch, tickle, or massage. On bigger kids, we can incorporate fun activities into their adjustments, such as jumping.

Can You Receive Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy?

Chiropractic care is generally safe during pregnancy, but it's a good idea to double check with your OB/GYN before scheduling an appointment. Many patients find that chiropractic treatments help alleviate the aches commonly associated with pregnancy.

What Conditions Can Sports Chiropractic Address?

Sports chiropractic is beneficial for athletes of all levels and can address various conditions, including musculoskeletal injuries, joint pain, and biomechanical issues. Through targeted adjustments and rehabilitative exercises, sports chiropractors aim to optimize performance, prevent injuries, and support overall athletic well-being.

Sports chiropractic is helpful for many muscle and bone issues, such as:

1. Sprains and strains

2. Shoulder problems

3. Tennis and golfer’s elbow

4. Runner’s knee

5. Shin splints

6. Ankle and foot injuries

7. Hip and groin pain

8. Back and neck pain

9. Muscle imbalances and problems with how you stand or sit

What Causes the Popping Sound During an Adjustment?

Most patients experience a popping or cracking sound during spinal manipulation. This is not dangerous, and it typically does not cause discomfort for patients. This sound occurs because gas and fluids are moving through your spine. Your body depends on fluids to lubricate the bones between each section of your spinal joints, so it's normal to have this fluid in your skeletal system.

How Do I Know if I Need Chiropractic Care?

A chiropractic adjustment is an effective treatment option for all ages, including both children and adults. The most common age range for someone to seek chiropractic care is between 45 and 64 years old. We will provide you with a screening before your chiropractic adjustment to ensure that you're a good candidate for chiropractic care. Many patients seek chiropractic care for symptoms such as chronic pain, fatigue, lack of energy, digestive problems, muscle aches, numbness, and tingling. All of these issues can be addressed with chiropractic care.

Can I Request Chiropractic Care Without a Referral?

We treat patients who do not have referrals from their primary care physicians or other medical providers. In fact, some patients visit us before they see another doctor. However, some insurance providers still require prior authorization for patients. Check with your insurance company before you schedule an appointment.

Are Chiropractic Treatments Painful?

Chiropractic treatments typically aren't painful, though some patients experience minor discomfort after an appointment. We can offer suggestions to decrease discomfort, such as using ice packs or a heating pad at home. You may also find it helpful to perform gentle stretches after your appointment.

That being said, most patients leave with less pain than they had upon arrival. Progress takes time, but you may experience immediate relief after an adjustment or other services. Let us know if you are sensitive to chiropractic care so we can help make your visit more enjoyable.

How Many Visits Does It Take to Get Better?

Some patients only visit us a handful of times. Other patients require weeks or months of consistent care. The amount of time required for your recovery depends on a number of factors, including the severity of your condition and the level of improvement you want. Some patients want their pain to reach a manageable level, while others want to visit us until it disappears completely. Talk to us about your goals so we can develop a treatment plan tailored toward your wishes.
